Adult Baby

You might hate me for this, but here is a disturbing image that should be burned into your mind. Stanley Thorton is a thirty-year old man who was featured on National Geographic's program Taboo. Thorton lives his life as an adult baby. He is bottle-fed, sucks on a pacifier and uses baby talk. He also sleeps in a giant crib, plays with baby toys in a playpen and, yes, wears a diaper.

You can watch the video clip below to see more about this guy. Fair warning: it may be painful to your stomach to see this. Please believe me that I'm showing this to you for a purpose. I'm trying to make a point.

I want people to look at this because I want you to be disturbed. An adult living like this is simply not right. That's why I want this image to be forever burned into your memory.
Now, I want you to imagine that you are given special pair of glasses that allows you to look around and see what people look like spiritually. What would most people look like? What would most people in your church look like? What would you see in a mirror?

If we had these glasses, I'm afraid we would see that America is crawling with adult babies.

There is an appropriate time for someone to be baby Christians. We don't expect babies to be mature right when they are born. Babies need appropriate care. Babies need milk. And, babies make...messes. We shouldn't expect Christians to be spiritually mature the moment they are born again. Also, none of us will ever reach perfection in this life, but we should grow up. It's normal to be a baby for a while, but after a long time, it's disturbing.

Getting older happens automatically. Becoming spiritually mature does not.

Paul chided the Corinthians Christians for still being "mere infants" in Christ. He lamented that he still had to give them spiritual milk instead of solid food because they weren't ready for it (1 Cor. 3:1-3). The author to the Hebrews made a similar statement. He wrote:
"We have much to say about this, but it is hard to explain because you are slow to learn. In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil." -Hebrews 5:11-14
In contrast, Paul wrote that the goal for Christians is to become "mature" and to "no longer be infants" (Eph 4;11-14). So, how are you growing? If you are a young person, what are you doing now so that you won't end up being an adult baby? If you're already a biological adult, what do you look like spiritually? Are you where you think you should be? If not, remember, it's better to have a late start than to stay in the playpen forever.

Let these images haunt you. Please be terrified of being a spiritual adult baby.

  1. Wow. I mean WOW. Soooooo.... this guy doesn't have any "issues" beyond being a complete loser and freak?

There are no words. I'm thinking that this guy having his diapers changed by his MOTHER constitutes some version of incest. In fact, I'm positive it does...

  2. Hey rommie...clearly, I'm not much of a responder, but I have a request to make of you. Would you consider writing an "episode 2" of this piece? You clearly write well and have a knack for connecting world stuff to spiritual stuff, but I would love to see the writing from the leaders of our generation begin to provide some definition. If you took the time to flesh out what being mature might look like, we might be able to help formulate what a grown up follower might look like in our generation. Comparing our two writings, we would certianly provide different conclusions, but I think people would celebrate, if in fact we serve adolescents both in a spiritual and physical sense, if we showed them the goals as we see it and not simply the deficit. Now, let's blow this thing and get out of here.

  3. people talk more than they listen. this has nothing to do with incest in anny way. he's an adult and his mom, played or not, is also an adult, remember ? so if you have nothing meanful to say.. keep ik to yourself and let people be.

  4. Oh my...it truly does sadden my Christian heart to know that so many are headed straight for the hell fires of eternal damnation and everlasting torment.

I'm afraid that the Bible is ~explicitly~ clear on this matter...there is...no question...

    Matthew 18:3

And he said: "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

...really doesn't get any more precise than that. If you are not an infantilist to some degree or another...you do not get to go to heaven...period.

Me...I like PUZZLES personally...and coloring...it's quite relaxing, especially knowing that I get to enter the kingdom of heaven.

  8. Hello All, I just found this today. I am the adult baby from the story above. And you have the wrong idea. I do not role play as a baby 24/7 all day every day. I do role play daily, but only for 1-3 hours a day depending on my level of stress. The rest of the day I dress and act as adult as anyone else. It's like being a actor, I am acting the part of a two year old. As for the diapers. I wear them if I am role playing or not as I am incontinent from being abused as a teen. And as for being on disability, I am not on it because I role play. I am on it because I have bipolar, depression ADHD, PTSD (from severe child abuse), anxiety disorder, adjustment disorder, reactive attachment disorder, suicidal ideation (frequent involuntary thoughts of suicide), incontinent, severe spinal injury (from being abused), and a heart problem. And as for not going to Heaven, hate to tell you but AB's (Adult Babies) go to Heaven too. I died last year when my heart stopped and I was in Heaven for a short time before I was sent back to my body because it wasn't my time yet. Anyway, if you wish to ask questions or know more, your welcome to e-mail me at Stanley_19802@yahoo.com or you can read my detailed biography at http://www.bedwettingabdl.com/Stanleys_personal_page.html

  9. Why don't you take a long look at yourselves. Are you being an ignorant ass? Are any of you even qualified to understand. More so if you rely solely on the media to educate you, then I to say you are willfully ignorant and sheep.

  11. Typical 'Christian' behavior. I'm not a Christian, but know of one of the basest tenants of the faith. Comes from the book of Matthew.

    Matthew 7:1-3

1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.

2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

Seems to me 99% of 'True Christians' just ignore the H out of this passage of the Bible. I guess the word is variably applicable?
